Epigenetics has not been investigated in EMF so far. A few studies found interesting patterns in saprotrophic fungi, such as hyper-methylated transposable elements, thought to silence the least fit haplotype.
Since TEs play important roles in EMF ecology, especially in adaptation, we want to test if similar patterns can be recovered in B. edulis. This could explain how European populations can carry so much structural variation, if maladapted regions are silenced through methylation.
